Rideau Canal is the most remarkable slackwater canal in the world, and one of the first canals designed specifically for steam-powered vessels. Since its establishment in 1832, almost all main elements of the canal remain intact as its original condition. Its masonry elements like locks and sluice valves have become historical relics. Picturesque views along its course are one of the most fascinating highlights in Ottawa.
