The Suez Canal is 193 kilometres in length, linking Europe, Asia, and Africa. The concept of connecting the Red Sea with the Mediterranean Sea dates back to the period of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt.
The canal was officially opened in November 1869. The canal provides an avenue for vessels to pass between Asia, especially the Middle East and Europe, so that ships do not have to go around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, approximately 12 percent of global trade uses the canal.
