中央运河负责连接比利时东西向的两条大河，挡在运河中央的是一座高67米的山丘，为了翻越山丘，人们历时35年，建造四个升船机使船舶通过7千米的水道，在极短的距离里提升66.2米高，世界范围内也实属罕见。
The Canal du Centre connects the two major rivers running east-west in Belgium, with a 67-meter-high ridge blocking in between. It took 35 years to build the four enormous hydraulic lifts over the 7-km-long waterway, which, as rare as it is, could raise a barge 66.2 meters high in an extremely short distance.
