同心圆型运河区内有大约90座岛屿和1500座桥梁。运河网络的主要任务是通过运河来排干同心弧形沼泽地，填平中间空地来扩大城市空间，建造建筑和设施，也使得阿姆斯特丹被称为"北方的威尼斯"。
With 1500 bridges linking around 90 islands within the Area. The canal networks are made mainly to extend the city for architectures and constructions by draining the swampland, using a system of canals in concentric arc, and filling in the intermediate spaces, consequently, dubbing Amsterdam “the Venice of the North”.
