On August 2, 2024, the event“Chang’an Elegant Gathering | The Creative Mind & Dexterous Hands: A Celebration of Ingenuity and Artistry” was held at the Cultural Space of Beijing Overseas Cultural Exchange Center. This event featured Lang Jiaziyu, a’95s artist and the third-generation inheritor of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Beijing“Dough Figurine Lang”. Lang shared the heritage and evolution of dough figurine craftsmanship, offering attendees a fascinating look into its rich history and colorful present.

面塑是中国民间工艺的一种绝活儿，俗称面人或江米人，是以面粉、糯米粉、蜂蜜、甘油等为原料，经过揉匀、调色，制成各种彩色面，用两只灵巧的手捏制成造型各异的微缩人物或禽兽花鸟的形象。在古代，民间逢年过节或喜庆之时，面塑常作为求吉纳福的馈赠食品或祭祀供品。
Dough figurine art is a unique Chinese folk craft. It involves using ingredients like wheat flour, glutinous rice flour, honey, and glycerin to create colorful doughs, which are then skillfully shaped into miniature figures of people, animals, and birds. Historically, these figurines were often given as gifts or used as offerings during festivals and celebrations to bring good fortune.

郎佳子彧在活动现场向大家介绍了郎家面塑艺术题材、美学的创新追求及面塑艺术在海外的传播。郎佳子彧表示，每一代人的生活都有新东西值得记住和展现，把当代文化、流行文化呈现在自己的作品里，这是优秀的面塑艺术作品的共同点。
At the event, Lang Jiaziyu introduced the themes, aesthetic innovations, and international reach of Dough Figurine Lang’s art. He emphasized that each generationbringsnew elements worthremembering and showcasing, andincorporating contemporary and popular culture into dough figurine art is a common trait of exceptional craftsmanship.
作为年轻一代非遗传承人，郎佳子彧不仅在传承、发展“面人郎”，也在探索如何为这门传统技艺“吸粉”。从2019年起，郎佳子彧在全媒体平台打造“面人郎”品牌，推送的内容更为集中、专注，面塑作品题材也紧抓时下热点，创作能引发年轻一代共鸣的人和物。郎佳子彧在抖音开通账号后，发布的第一支视频作品《哪吒来了》就获得了12.9万点赞，全平台累计粉丝量超过240万。越来越多的年轻人开始关注非遗技艺，感受到中国传统文化的艺术魅力和文化价值。
As a young inheritor of this intangible cultural heritage, Lang Jiaziyu not only continues to develop the“Dough Figurine Lang”tradition but also explores ways to attract new followers. Since 2019, Lang Jiaziyu has developed the“Dough Figurine Lang”brand across various media platforms, honing in on more focused and relevant content. His dough figurine creations highlight people and themes that resonate with the younger generation.Lang’s first video on Douyin,“Here Comes Nezha”, received 129,000 likes, and his total follower count across all platforms has surpassed 2.4 million. More and more young people are becoming interested in intangible cultural heritage and appreciating the artistic charm and cultural value of traditional Chinese art.
郎佳子彧认为，传承传统手工艺不意味着一成不变。当题材接近当代人生活的时候，这种艺术形式才会有生命力。利用好这个时代给我们的一切，与当下、与大众产生连接，才能让面塑这样的非物质文化遗产和小众艺术门类破圈而出。
Lang Jiaziyu believes that preserving traditional crafts does not mean remainingunchanged. When the themes of the art are relevant to contemporary life, the art form itself becomes vibrant. By leveraging everything our era has to offer and connecting with the present and the public, intangible cultural heritage like dough figurine art can break through niche barriers and gain wider recognition.

此次长安雅集活动首次尝试将非遗手工艺与3D全息投影技术融合，向嘉宾呈现了作品《司马光砸缸救友》，这一技术形态的更新对艺术作品的保存与传播提供了新的思路。现场嘉宾通过近距离观察全息展柜作品，感受到传统技艺与时代特色融合的震撼，对其精妙巧思与艺术性发出赞叹，非遗文化的生机与活力在此刻实现了具像化地展示。
For the first time ever, the Chang’an Elegant Gathering event integrated intangible cultural heritage with 3D projection technology. This was showcased through the artwork“Sima Guang Smashing the Water Vat to Save a Friend”, offering a new perspective on the preservation and dissemination of artistic works. Guests closely observed the holographic display, marveling at the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. This innovative presentation brought the vibrancy and creativity of intangible cultural heritage to life.

The fusion of traditional art with modern technology is crucial for connecting with contemporary audiences and embracing the future. Since the 1950s, dough figurine art has been showcased nationally and across the world. Traditional artists, while maintaining their dedication to craftsmanship, are also eager to infuse new life into this time-honored art form.

北京市海外文化交流中心自创办长安雅集项目以来，已举办超过23场主题活动，此次携手国家级非物质文化遗产北京“面人郎”，首次打造“长安雅集|百年散步——面人郎家族面塑艺术展”，展览现场通过“农耕文明的硕果”“影像：京华面人郎”“手工艺的黄金时代”“面塑世家”“当代语境下的面人郎”五部分，共展出77件作品。观展人穿梭其间，弹指一挥间散步了百年，明晰了面塑发展的脉络、传承的困境和新时代“传统艺术家”的使命。展览将持续至2024年8月30日，敬请光临。
Since its inception, the Chang’an Elegant Gathering project, launched by Beijing Overseas Cultural Exchange Center, has hosted over 23 themed events. This time, in collaboration with the National Intangible Cultural Heritage “Dough Figurine Lang”, the project presents for the first time ever the “Chang’an Elegant Gathering | A Centennial Stroll: Dough Figurine Lang Family Works Exhibition”. The exhibition comprises five sections:“Fruits of the Agricultural Civilization”,“Footage: Beijing Dough Figurine Lang”,“The Golden Age of Handicrafts”,“Family Legacy of Dough Figurine Art”, and“Dough Figurine Lang in Contemporary Context”, showcasing 77 pieces in total. Visitors can journey through a century of dough figurine art, understanding its development, the challenges of heritage preservation, and the mission of“traditional artists”in the modern era.
